Orchestrator / Conductor

Larry Groupé

The eternal optimist and all around genuinely nice guy, Larry has remained relatively un-jaded despite some the hellaciousness of our experiences. He's remained real in an industry that eats nice people up and spits them out like chewing tobacco. Always full of anecdotes and very dry jokes, some which go over my head, he's been helping me orchestrate and conducting my work as far back as my first orchestral piece, "Field of Competition" and "Fugi's Reign". Having worked with very small ensembles for his library work, Larry showed me his system of "stacking" strings (overdubbing the same passages two or three times) to give a smaller group the feel and power of a large section. This technique, as used in Suspects, has now become the way I do things, providing a cost savings in recording music, as well as an added creative control of the string section for my mixes.

One time after a recording session, Larry out of the blue exclaimed it was time for "Festival." I thought for a moment that he couldn't possibly be referring to an old "Star Trek" episode -- but he was. We then got into a brief discussion of how great the music used to be for the series. I knew then that he was "of the body" and that our tastes would be similar. (For those reading who have NO idea what I'm talking about, you'd have to see the episode.) Larry's balls-out approach, especially for brass, has offered me many joyful moments.

Now that he's landed some of his own feature projects, his "biz" naiveté and un-jaded armor has had some nicks and dents to my chagrin. We can now call each other and commiserate, or cry on each other's shoulder, as it were. It's a dog-eat-dog world.
