Past Music Editor / Current Queen of Sony Music

Lia Vollack

We call her Princess Lia. Lia's aura is Nervous Energy with a look of deep seriousness at all times. She has strong opinions, but you're lucky if she divulges them right away. I'll often say something like, "I think that works really well, don't you?" It will be often met with a stone face, long pause, and finally an almost inaudible, "Yeah." (I think this rubbed off on Amanda to some degree.) So they always have me questioning my convictions! Always dressed in black, Lia is a fan of the perverse and this is why she was one of the most excited about the prospect of Apt Pupil. She was the one behind the wacky idea of placing "Das Ist Berlin" (an old German song she found) over a "happy" scene in the film. It was a brilliant move and is her most glorious mark on the film. After I scored Suspects, she was introduced to me as my music editor before I even knew what the hell a music editor was. We had no SMPTE references on the mixed-down score tapes, except a dialog track. Lia synched all the music in the film by lining up the dialog until it didn't phase anymore. This was her first taste of the unconventional world of John -- and one she would never get used to! She had a world of experience on the business side of film, so she was a great resource of how things would be done and helped me immensely acting as a liasion between me and veterans of the industry, like contractor Sandy DeCrescent on Cable Guy. Amanda became Lia's Assistant on that film. I think Lia still rolls her eyes the moment I try to do something other than by the book, and maybe that's why I do it! During Apt Pupil she was offered the VP spot in Sony music, so now she's back as a big wig suit, fully earning her Princess title.
