John's Thoughts

This was my second and last piece I wrote for Network Music. It was also very embarrassing because of a major screw-up on my part. I had written the piece for the orchestra, Larry did his orchestrations, and the musicians were booked. I brought down all my gear the day before the session so that we could lay back all the synthesized parts that were to accompany the orchestra. Somehow we discovered that all my synth parts were way the hell out of tune: further out than the orchestra could ever tune to. Somehow all the settings got set to something very far away from 440, yet every synth module was tuned the same wacky way. To this day I have no idea what happened, nor do I remember why we couldn't have retuned them before the session. At any rate, we had to cancel the orchestra. But my synth tracks (as usual) were so detailed, we ended up making it a synth cue. They later renamed it "Mysterious Orient". It pops up from time to time on documentaries about the Far East. It was a dark piece in the spirit of Public Access, but with an oriental twist.
