Out of the Closet
(1986)

John's Thoughts

This film became such a hit in my USC class that I did a sequel to it as my last film of the semester. This was my first film at USC and it pretty much blew the class away. I had been making films since the 5th grade and assumed everyone else had too - but I was surprised to see that few had even picked up a Super-8 camera. Everyone shot on silent film and had music accompany them on cassette; but then I walked in with a polished extravagant thing with sync sound and and elaborately edited musical score on a second track that I dubbed onto the sound-striped film. Out of the Closet concerned a nerdy character, Jerold, who is given a stuffed animal every year by his crazy aunt. After she leaves he throws them in the closet for a year, only to display them about the house in anticipation of her yearly visit. One day a stuffed animal takes charge and terrorizes Jerold in a wild cat and mouse game of stalking and suspense. An early Chucky film I guess.
