John's Thoughts

Harlan Ellison wrote the story from which this interactive CD-ROM game was based. This project was done after Suspects was completed, but before its release. I think I finished it before "Night Train" started. It was a lot of work, having to write themes for five characters, each having three different themes of their own depending on their state of mind and their setting. There were also transitory themes and filler music that looped for this sinister tale. It totaled about 70 minutes of music. Unfortunately the whole thing was done on General MIDI so it could play through sound cards. The irony: there was one theme in particular for the section in the game about a concentration camp and an evil German scientist, Nimdock. When writing the theme to Apt Pupil I adapted a brief motif within the Apt Pupil theme based upon this old theme. So it sort of had its day. Another theme in the game also was adapted to become a brief theme in "Night Train". So doing all those themes for all those characters was really a sort of self-created ground-laying catalog to go to for thematic ideas of my own. The funny thing about this General MIDI score is that if it were re-performed by the orchestra, it would have a huge epic quality to it. Hmmm, maybe someday.
