This was a beautifully shot 10 minute montage of symbolic scenes from a proposed feature about a man's denials, torment and coming to grips with his sexuality. The symbolic flashbacks were in a tribal-like setting. The music was never used, but ironically the theme came to the rescue years later when I was thinking of the theme for "Fantasy Island". I realized that the theme to "Hope and Despair" had a tribal riff in it that would be great to underpin "Fantasy Island"'s theme. The show, "Fantasy Island", is in essence about life's lessons and the human condition, and so was the theme to "Hope and Despair," although decidedly darker in nature. So I adapted the melody line of this theme, rearranged it to be quirkier and lighter, and this became the basis for the theme to "Fantasy Island".
