John's Thoughts
After "Alive and Kicking", the director, Luke Greenfield, recommended me to a fellow student, Jeff Gettinger, producing a larger budget "student" film. Jeff managed to get Todd-AO in studio city to donate their time and give us the stage to use for this widescreen short. So here was this little 40 piece student orchestra in this blimp hanger. It sounded quite washy and nondescript, which is when I learned a huge room is not always the best. Some musicians were naturals while others were just learning, which was painfully audible. Cue #4 isn't called "Bombs, Snakes & Mistakes" for nothing. The score was a desert film about a soldier who steps on a land mine switch and can't lift his foot or he'll blow up. I had fun referring to Goldsmith's Wind and the Lion and the spirit of Jarre's Lawrence of Arabia.
